The timing was no accident. Witherspoon is producing Elle through Hello Sunshine, and the prequel follows a high school version of Elle Woods in 1995, with Lexi Minetree taking over the role. The reunion also brought in Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers as moderators, framing the evening as part celebration and part handoff to a new generation of the story.
For Witherspoon, the moment landed harder than a standard promotional stop. She said seeing everyone together felt galvanizing and made her want to cry, adding that playing the character for 25 years has been the privilege of her life. She pointed to the way fans still connect the role to their own lives, saying people tell her they went to law school because of Elle, named a daughter Elle or pushed through a challenge because of her.
That legacy was on display in the room, but so was a detail that undercut the polished nostalgia. Coolidge said she was lucky to get cast in the movie, but also admitted she had foolishly believed she was auditioning to play Elle herself. The confession fit the mood: this was a reunion built on affection, but also on the reminder that Witherspoon had made the role so singular that even one of the film’s most memorable stars once imagined stepping into it.
The event also leaned into the franchise’s reach beyond the original cast. Hoku performed “Perfect Day,” Vanessa Carlton sang “A Thousand Miles,” and the evening was presented as the start of a new chapter rather than a farewell to the old one. Elle starts streaming on July 1 on Prime Video, and the public reunion made clear that the film’s cast is still a selling point 25 years later, even as the story moves back to Elle Woods’s high school years in Seattle. The only open question is how much of that old cast will remain part of the new show after this weekend’s rare full-circle moment.
