James Norton has been cast as Lord Ormund Hightower in House of the Dragon Season 3, bringing one of the biggest new names in the next chapter of the series into the fight. The role puts Norton at the center of the Greens' side of the Dance of the Dragons, where Ormund arrives as the head of House Hightower and lord of the Hightower in Oldtown.
That is why viewers are searching for Omund Hightower now: he is not a small addition, but a powerful player in a war that has already been tilted by dragons and divided loyalties. House of the Dragon says Ormund commands a host of 15,000 men, and Ryan Condal has described him as essentially the Tywin Lannister of this world — the richest man not sitting on a throne, with the largest standing army left in Westeros and a dragon.
Oldtown gives that power its weight. It is the largest and richest city in Westeros and one of the realm's busiest trade ports, which means House Hightower does not just bring soldiers to the Dance of the Dragons; it brings money, reach and influence. The family has long stood among the most powerful in the Seven Kingdoms, and Ormund's entry into Season 3 extends that pressure into the next phase of the war.
There is, though, a catch built into the character from the start. The dragon tied to Ormund is Tessarion, but Tessarion technically belongs to Daeron Targaryen, the youngest child of Viserys and Alicent and Ormund's ward. That makes Ormund look formidable on paper, but it also leaves the question of how much control he truly has over the dragon that is supposed to strengthen him. The setup gives him force and authority, yet the arrangement around Tessarion is not as clean as his reputation suggests.
For Norton, the part adds another major turn to a career that already includes Happy Valley, Grantchester, King & Conqueror and House of Guinness. For House of the Dragon, it means Season 3 is moving beyond the early board moves of the civil war and putting House Hightower directly into the field. Ormund had been left at Oldtown while the conflict unfolded; now he is set to leave it and join the fight, which makes him one of the clearest signs that the war is widening, not slowing down.
