Marvel has set Avengers: Doomsday for December 18, the same day Dune: Part Three is due in theaters, turning the holiday corridor into a direct box office collision. The release date changed after the film was originally slated for May, giving the studio a longer runway and setting up one of the year’s most crowded weekends.

That is why the film is already drawing search interest: it is not just another Marvel sequel, but a December event built around Robert Downey Jr. returning to the MCU as Doctor Doom. Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth are said to have key roles, and Joe and Anthony are directing the film as well as Avengers: Secret Wars, which is also on the calendar for December 2027.

The timing matters because Avengers: Doomsday arrives with far more marketing noise than plot detail. Very little is known about the story, even as the studio is positioning it as a major crossover. The comparison to Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame is baked into the plan, but this time the audience is being asked to mark a date before it knows what kind of battle is coming.

Marvel’s broader slate is already feeding that buildup. In 2026, the company released Wonder Man and Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, while Tom Holland is due back on the big screen in Spider-Man: Brand New Day after five years. Mark Ruffalo is confirmed to appear as Bruce Banner in that film, Jon Bernthal is set as Frank Castle, and Paul Bettany returns as Vision in Vision Quest for the first time since WandaVision.

The next real checkpoint is this summer, when the first official trailer for Avengers: Doomsday is expected. Until then, the most concrete fact is the date on the calendar: December 18, when Marvel’s biggest unknown lands opposite Dune: Part Three and the box office fight begins before either film reaches opening weekend.
