Thibaut Courtois has said he wants to finish his career at Real Madrid and does not expect to play in Belgium again. Speaking while on World Cup duty, the Belgium goalkeeper made clear that a return to the Pro League before retirement is off the table.
Courtois tied that decision to where he sees the rest of his career going. “I’m not thinking about playing in Belgium again. For me, the Pro League is a closed chapter. Genk also has many good young goalkeepers, so… My goal is to finish my career at Real Madrid,” he said.
The timing matters because he was speaking with Belgium still focused on its next match against Iran. Courtois said Belgium wanted to win and finish first in the group so it could stay in Seattle and travel less, with fewer hotel changes and less wear on the family. He said he has been watching World Cup matches closely and believes the margin between teams is usually small. “It’ll be the same against Iran,” he said.
That practical view of the tournament ran alongside a harder critique of the media climate around him. Courtois said unrest before Qatar did not help the team and that he would prefer criticism appear after the tournament rather than during it. He also said he often reads fabricated things in Spain, though some of those reports later prove true, and blamed social media and AI for helping false stories spread. In his words, “Maybe 80 percent is false.”
Courtois also drew a line between how he follows soccer and how he views other sports. He said he likes American sports such as the NBA and the NFL because of their quality and work ethic, adding that players in his own sport can learn from the way those athletes prepare. He said many soccer players quit after fifteen minutes, a remark that underscored how sharply he views the gap in habits across sports.
For Belgium, the immediate issue is simple: win against Iran and keep the travel light. For Courtois, the longer answer is already on the record. He has said where he wants to end his career, and it is not in Belgium.
