Tyler Stephenson was out of the Reds' lineup for Wednesday's game against the Mets, and Jose Trevino took over behind the plate. Trevino also batted eighth as the Reds made the catching switch for the day game.
The move came one night after Stephenson caught nine innings in Tuesday's 5-3 win and went 1-for-3 at the dish. That kind of workload makes a rest day easy to explain on paper: a catcher who handles a full game on Tuesday can be given a breather when the next game comes the very next day.
That is what happened here. Stephenson was not listed to start Wednesday, and the Reds chose to protect the wear that comes with nine innings behind the plate. For a position built on crouches, throws and constant movement, the difference between playing through a night game and returning for a day game can be enough to change the lineup.
What remains unspoken is whether this was simply planned workload management or the kind of rest that follows a night of heavy use. The lineup change itself was straightforward. Stephenson sat, Trevino started, and the Reds carried on with a different catcher for one game.
