Jon Pacheco will report to Real Sociedad’s pre-season on 4 July, ending his loan spell at Deportivo Alavés and stepping back into the senior group with a chance to reset his place in the squad. He is under contract until 2029, and the club now wants to see whether that long deal can translate into a real role.
That is why his name matters now. Real Sociedad are already deep into planning for next season, even though there have been no market moves yet, and signings are expected. In that frame, Pacheco is not just returning from a loan; he is returning into a squad that is being shaped again, with the defence likely to be reinforced.
Erik Bretos has made clear the club still believes in him. He said Real Sociedad counts on Pacheco, rates his talent and is keen to have him at the club next season. He also said the player is eager to make the most of the opportunity, which is the only way a return like this becomes more than a date on the calendar. For a defender who has already been tied down for the long term, the club’s view is that the next stage is not about finding him again, but about making him useful.
The loan at Deportivo Alavés showed both sides of that argument. Pacheco impressed in the first half of the campaign, then lost prominence after the break. Bretos said he must help analyse why he slipped out of the side in Vitoria and what he needs to improve to avoid the same pattern again. That is the friction in his story: the talent is not in doubt, but his place can vanish quickly if the level drops.
When Pacheco joins the senior group, he will also work with Pellegrino Matarazzo for the first time, which makes the summer significant beyond the routine return from loan. Real Sociedad do not yet have a market movement to point to, but they are moving toward a season in which the defence is expected to change, and Pacheco arrives into that discussion with time on his side and a point to prove.
