Miami remains the frontrunner to land Giannis Antetokounmpo if Milwaukee decides to trade him, but the deal is not close because the Bucks want more than Miami has put on the table. The gap is now the story: one side is trying to protect its future, and the other is trying to decide whether its best player in franchise history is actually available.
That is why the search around the Miami Heat is so intense today. The reported package is built around Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis and draft capital, but Miami would like to keep Jaquez or another player in the deal so it has more around Antetokounmpo if he arrives. In other words, the Heat want enough left to compete with him, while Milwaukee is trying to make sure it does not give away a two-time MVP and NBA Champion for a return that leaves the acquiring team stripped down.
Jon Horst understands the scale of that ask, and Jake Fischer said the Bucks have been chasing returns that would leave any club too barren to contend for a championship. Fischer also said Minnesota talked with Milwaukee about trade parameters at the February deadline and revisited those talks in recent weeks, only to find Milwaukee asking for even more. That helps explain why other teams keep surfacing in the conversation: not because they are suddenly the favorite, but because they give Milwaukee leverage while it waits for someone to meet its price.
The friction point is simple. Zach Lowe said Miami is still the frontrunner unless another team beats the standing offer, but he also kept hearing that Milwaukee does not love Miami’s offer. Lowe’s bluntest read was the one that matters most: if the Bucks liked it, Antetokounmpo would already be on Miami. That leaves the Heat in the best spot, but not yet in the clear.
There was speculation that Milwaukee might try to finish the saga by the June 23 NBA Draft, but the more likely reality is that this can stretch into free agency if the Bucks do not get the kind of return they want. For now, Miami remains the most likely landing spot if Antetokounmpo is moved in the coming days, and the next move may come down to whether Milwaukee lowers its demands or the Heat decide to put a little more on the table.
