A 17-year-old girl was killed Friday when an off-highway vehicle overturned in Garden City, turning what police described as a parking lot stunt into a fatal crash. She was riding in the vehicle with three other teenagers when it tipped over.
Police said the group, all teenagers from California, were doing donuts in the parking lot of Heritage Park at about 4:15 p.m. when the vehicle went over. The girl was ejected from the back and later pronounced dead after medical responders tried to help her.
Her name has not been released. That leaves the crash as both a personal loss and a public question: how a maneuver that may have started as reckless driving ended in a rollover that killed one passenger and left the others to face an investigation that is still open.
The Utah Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Division said it offers its sympathies and condolences to the girl’s family and friends during this difficult time. The investigation remains under way, and the unanswered piece is the one that matters most now — what caused the vehicle to tip over in the first place.
