Scotland, which had opened with a win over Haiti, left Gillette Stadium with its first loss of the round and a much narrower path through the group.
The goal itself came almost immediately, the sort of start that can break a match before it has settled. Saibari’s finish after 71 seconds forced Scotland to chase from the opening stretch, and Morocco spent the rest of the evening protecting a lead that had arrived before most of the crowd had found its rhythm.
There was another reason the night carried weight beyond the scoreboard. In the 76th minute, the crowd held a minute of applause for Donny Strathie, 76, from Grangemouth in central Scotland. Strathie had died on Sunday after collapsing in the foyer of the Norwood hotel, where he had been staying with two friends for the World Cup. He, his two friends and one of his nephews had tickets for Friday’s game.
Scotland manager Steve Clarke’s frustration was plain after the defeat, saying, “I wish we could start again.” The words fit the shape of the loss. Scotland had arrived with momentum from its opening win, but Morocco erased that with one early strike and left the group race compressed heading into the final matchday, where every side still has something to prove and no one can afford another slow start.
