Ayyoub Bouaddi did not look like a player easing into a World Cup debut. The 18-year-old Lille midfielder was at the center of Morocco’s play in its 1-1 draw with Brazil on Saturday, pressing, carrying and linking moves with a calm that made the result feel bigger than a group-stage opener.
That is why his name is being searched now. Bouaddi was given licence to roam by Mohamed Ouahbi, and he used it to keep showing up where Morocco needed him most. He finished with more touches than any other Morocco player, 87 in all, and completed 53 carries, 15 more than Azzedine Ounahi. For a midfielder studying for a degree in mathematics, the performance had a kind of precision to it: he kept finding the right angles, the next pass, the spare yard of space before Brazil could shut the door.
Morocco had already started building around the right side, with 47 per cent of its attacks going down that flank in the first half, and Bouaddi helped make that lane work. He clapped for Chadi Riad’s pass in the 87th minute before taking a touch, the sort of small, sharp detail that showed how involved he was in everything Morocco did. His most natural job was supposed to be defensive, yet he was regularly stationed high up the pitch in the early exchanges, pressing Casemiro inside the first minute and forcing Brazil to deal with him before it could settle.
That blend of control and aggression is part of why young central midfielders so rarely become World Cup talking points. They usually need more time to harden physically and read matches at this level, but Bouaddi, who began last season as a 17-year-old and now stands 6ft 1in, looked as if he belonged in the noise of a match like this. He snapped into challenges, fought for second balls and kept Morocco moving when the game demanded patience as much as energy.
Morocco’s most influential player on the right was Achraf Hakimi, and Bouaddi’s work helped the team use that side without becoming predictable. The draw will not define a tournament, but it did something more immediate for Morocco: it showed that one of its youngest players can carry responsibility against Brazil and not blink. The open question is how much more of that Ouahbi will ask from him after a debut that looked less like a surprise than the start of a larger role.
