Joe Scally watch: Pulisic may sit as USMNT weighs Australia plans

Christian Pulisic aggravated an existing injury and was unlikely to play when the U.S. Men's National Team faced Australia in Seattle at noon PST, leaving Mauricio Pochettino to sort out a match that carried knockout-round consequences without his top attacking threat.

The timing matters because the U.S. already had three points after its 4-1 win over Paraguay, so the staff did not have to force Pulisic into a match he had not really practiced for at the University of Washington on Thursday morning. If the injury keeps him out, the U.S. can still finish the job against Australia or wait for another chance by beating Turkey next week.

That is why the search around Joe Scally and the rest of the roster has shifted so quickly. The U.S. can clinch a bid to the knockout rounds with a win, but the possibility of doing it without Pulisic changes the whole shape of the night. Kacey White said there are a lot of ways to line the team up without him, pointing to the possibility of Brenden Aaronson, Sebastian Berhalter in a double pivot, Malik Tillman, Alejandro Zendejas or Gio Reyna depending on what Pochettino sees.

Brad Evans sounded the same warning from a different angle. He said before the tournament that the team would go as far as Pulisic carries it, then added that Pochettino has to make some adjustments. Evans also said the U.S. tends to get good results against Central American, Caribbean and South American teams, but Australia is built very similarly to the U.S., which makes this a different kind of test than the one that turned so sharply in the Paraguay win.

That shift leaves Seattle with more than one reason to watch. Cristian Roldan is on the roster, and for a former University of Washington star and current Seattle Sounders leader, that brings a local layer to a match that already matters for national pride and the path into the next round. If Pulisic is held back, the U.S. is betting that rest now is worth more than forcing him through one more game before the knockout stage begins.
