The Cubs had used him at designated hitter 47 times this season, while he had played just eight games behind the plate.
That usage made the decision harder to ignore. Ballesteros opened his rookie campaign by hitting.387/.435/.710 through April 27, and he had already shown promise late last year when he hit.298/.394/.474 in his first 66 big league plate appearances. But he had slumped to.128/.217/.170 over his past 106 plate appearances, a stretch that left the Cubs looking for a reset even with his prospect status still intact.
There is also a practical piece to the move. Ballesteros was 56 days shy of a full year of service, and he could still reach that mark if he returns to the majors for eight total weeks between June 19, 2026 and season’s end. That leaves the door open for a short stay in Triple-A Iowa rather than a long one, especially if the Cubs decide his bat is ready again before the year is out.
Pedro Ramirez could see more playing time while Ballesteros is down, but the immediate story is Dean. His first Cubs appearance is now the next thing to watch, while Ballesteros waits to see whether this assignment is a brief pause or the start of a longer run back in Des Moines.
