Australia beat Bangladesh on Wednesday in the 2026 Women's T20 World Cup, and Ellyse Perry gave the result a sharper edge by taking 2 for 14 from three overs. Bangladesh were held to 77, a total that left Australia in control and put Perry’s bowling back into the conversation.

That matters because Perry has not bowled regularly in recent years, even as Australia have leaned on her batting more often. The 35-year-old said she enjoys any chance to contribute with both bat and ball, adding that she has been “chipping away” with her bowling and that it keeps training interesting.

She also said there are always “bits and pieces” to learn and develop, and that getting the chance against Bangladesh was “really enjoyable.” The numbers behind that spell show why it drew attention: Perry has 129 wickets from 176 T20I matches since her debut in 2008, with an economy rate of 5.83. Before this World Cup, she had already bowled twice in warm-up matches against South Africa and the West Indies and took a wicket in each.

Sophie Molineux backed up that view, saying Perry bowls in every training session and is ready whenever Australia need her, even if she has not bowled much in matches. Molineux said Perry has been chipping away in the background, and that when she gets the opportunity she makes it count. That is the part Australia will take into the rest of the tournament: a player they know for her all-round game still looks capable of changing a match with the ball.

What remains unclear is how often Australia will ask her to do it again. Perry’s spell against Bangladesh showed she can still deliver when needed, but her recent workload suggests the team will keep treating her bowling as a weapon rather than a routine requirement. For Australia, that balance may be as useful as the wickets themselves.
