Josh Hart says he found a basketball home with the New York Knicks after years of moving through the NBA and sitting through one coaching change after another. Now the Knicks are one win from the championship, up 3-1 in the 2026 NBA Finals and carrying that edge into Game 5 on Saturday in San Antonio.
That is why Hart is being searched now. New York is one victory from its first NBA championship since 1973, and Hart has become part of why the run has held together. He said he was on his sixth coach in his first six seasons before arriving in New York in 2022, and that the city embraced both his style and the way he plays. The Knicks have matched that stability with results, posting three straight 50-win seasons and finishing 53-29 in 2025-26.
Hart’s value is not captured cleanly by points alone. He is averaging 10.3 points, 8.8 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 1.8 steals in the playoffs, but his impact has often shown up in the clutter between possessions. In Game 1, he scored three points on 1-for-5 shooting and missed all three of his 3-point attempts, yet he grabbed 15 rebounds, handed out six assists, produced four steals and blocked one shot. The Knicks were plus-22 in his 27 minutes, and he added two screen assists and three deflections while holding Stephon Castle to 1-for-3 shooting.
That is the part Hart says began at Villanova, where Coach Wright pushed him toward plays that do not show up in a traditional box score. He said that mindset stuck through four years there, and it still shapes his game now. In Game 4, the numbers again reflected the same habit: seven contested shots, an offensive loose ball recovered and a deflection that helped break up a possession. The Spurs shot 2-for-8 from 3-point range when Hart was the defender on the play, a small line that hints at a larger effect.
Mike Brown said after Game 1 that Hart affected the game in many different ways, and that is the point of him in this series. He is not carrying the Knicks by scoring in bunches; he is helping them win the series that has put them one game from a title.
