The activated from the 60-day injured list on June 12, bringing the two-time All-Star catcher back after nearly three months out with a broken left thumb. To make room, Toronto designated for assignment.

Kirk had surgery in early April and had played only five games this season before the move, so his return changes the shape of Toronto's catching picture immediately. It also ended Heineman's latest run with the club, his third stint with the Blue Jays since they claimed him off waivers from the in September 2024.

The roster shuffle did not stop there. The Blue Jays also placed outfielder on the 10-day injured list with left wrist inflammation and recalled from , while right-handed reliever Yariel Rodriguez cleared waivers after being designated for assignment on June 8 and will head back to Buffalo.

Heineman's exit comes despite a solid 2025 and strong defensive grades, but his 2026 line did not match that standard, as he hit.154/.205/.205 with one home run in 33 games and 87 plate appearances. Toronto clearly chose Kirk's upside over keeping the backup catcher in place, even though Kirk is still working back from a long absence and may need time to settle into a regular role again.

Varsho's injury is a blow to a lineup that had already been thin, and he had been out of the starting lineup since June 5 because of the wrist issue. He was hitting.256/.331/.408 with five home runs in 64 games and 236 plate appearances, so his trip to the injured list leaves another hole for Toronto to cover as Kirk returns and the Blue Jays keep reshaping the roster around their best healthy pieces.

The immediate question is how quickly Kirk can recapture the workload Toronto needs from him after appearing in only five games before the activation. The Blue Jays made the bet that his bat and presence behind the plate were worth more than Heineman's steadiness, and that answer will now be tested as the roster keeps moving around him.
