Police were called to Wood Street in Brierfield at 3.06pm on 12 June after reports of a stabbing, and a 17-year-old girl was taken to hospital with a wound to the back of her neck. Armed officers attended, a cordon went up and a 30-year-old man was arrested shortly afterwards on suspicion of attempted murder.
The arrest turned a street incident into a major police response in a community that was told to expect extra patrols that evening. Lancashire Police said the girl had been assaulted and suffered a stab injury to her neck, a wording that matched the seriousness of the response even as officers described the injury more precisely in hospital as a stab wound to the back of her neck.
The case matters now because it happened in daylight, on a residential street, and it brought armed officers into Brierfield within minutes. Police said the disruption would be felt locally and urged anyone who saw what happened, or who has CCTV or doorbell footage from the area, to come forward.
What remains unanswered is what led to the attack on Wood Street and how the girl is after treatment. Police have not said more about the circumstances of the stabbing, and the next step is for witnesses and anyone with footage to call 101 and quote log 0836 of 12th June while detectives continue to examine the arrest.
