RB Salzburg are reportedly in talks with Danny Röhl to become their new head coach, a move that could force Rangers back into the market before pre-season training begins. For supporters already looking ahead to next season, the question is no longer only whether Röhl stays, but who would follow him if he goes.
That matters because Rangers could be searching for a third manager in a year, with players due back in the next week or so. Röhl steadied the club after a torrid start under Russell Martin last season and hauled them back into the title race, but Rangers still finished third after losing four of their last five games.
The pull from Germany and Austria around Röhl has been building for some time, and Salzburg's interest now turns a background murmur into a live issue. Rangers have been here before too: when Martin was sacked last October, the club appointed Röhl instead of Steven Gerrard, who had once delivered their last league title in 2021.
Gerrard later said he was very close to returning to Ibrox and that, if he was going to take on a challenge of that size again, he had to be 100% ready. He said there were a few things he was uncertain about, and one was the set-up around the club at the time, including sporting director Kevin Thelwell. Thelwell and chief executive Patrick Stewart were both removed after the poor start to last season, and Rangers have not directly replaced Thelwell.
That leaves the next decision sharpened by timing as much as ambition. Andrew Cavenagh's consortium is willing to keep investing in the squad, which would appeal to Gerrard, while Derek McInnes remains a familiar name because of his record in Scottish football and his playing history with Rangers. If Röhl leaves for Salzburg, Rangers would not only be picking a manager again; they would be choosing whether to return to a proven club figure or turn to another route entirely before the new season has even started.
