For Roldan, the selection carries a sharp hometown feel. He was born in Artesia, Calif., and the U.S. opens World Cup play against Paraguay at 6:00 p.m. PT on June 19 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif., just 31 minutes from where he was born. The team also faces Australia at noon PT that same day at Lumen Field, giving Roldan a chance to play in the home city of his club team during a World Cup hosted across several U.S. venues.

Roldan was part of the U.S. squad at the 2022 World Cup as well, but his place on the 2026 roster also reflects a career built in Seattle. He has played for since turning professional and has won two titles, in 2016 and 2019, along with the in 2022 and the in 2025. He was named an MLS All-Star in 2021 and made the MLS Best XI last year.

The path to this moment began long before the World Cup spotlight. Roldan played for from 2013 to 2014, scoring seven goals and assisting on five more in 2013 while finishing with 19 points in 22 matches and 20 starts. He was named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year after that season, signed a Generation Adidas contract on Jan. 8, 2015, and went on to become a fixture for the U.S. men’s team, winning Gold Cup titles in 2017 and 2021.

What remains unknown is how much he will play once the tournament starts. The roster spot is secured, the locations are set and the opening match is fixed on the calendar. After that, Roldan’s next step is the same one facing every player on the list: turning selection into minutes when the U.S. meets Paraguay in Inglewood on June 19.
