Emily Watson will return to Sarajevo next summer as the president of the competition jury at the 32nd Sarajevo Film Festival, and the British actress will also receive the festival’s Honorary Heart of Sarajevo award. The announcement puts one of Britain’s best-known screen performers at the center of the festival’s key competition decisions while marking her first visit back to the city in twenty years.

The timing matters because the 32nd Sarajevo Film Festival runs from August 14-21, 2026, and the festival is already framing Watson’s role as one of its headline names. Jovan Marjanović, the festival director, said he was delighted to welcome her back after two decades away, calling attention both to her place in contemporary cinema and to the fact that she will be watching the work of this year’s filmmakers from the jury table.

Watson is a two-time Oscar nominee whose screen career has stretched from Breaking the Waves, Gosford Park and Punch-Drunk Love to Small Things Like These, Steve and The Theory of Everything. She recently starred in Chloé Zhao’s Hamnet as Mary Shakespeare, and the film went on to win the BAFTA for outstanding British film. Her television credits include Dune: Prophecy, Chernobyl, The Dresser and Apple Tree Yard, and her theatre work includes productions with the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Marjanović said Watson’s talent, intelligence and dedication had left a profound mark on contemporary cinema, and he added that filmmakers in the competition programme would be excited to know she will be viewing their work in Sarajevo. That gives the honor more weight than a ceremonial return: Watson will not only be celebrated by the festival, she will help shape the attention paid to the films competing there.

The unanswered part is the simplest one. The festival has made much of her return to Sarajevo after twenty years, but it has not said why she stayed away for so long. What is clear is that when the festival opens in August, Watson will arrive not as a guest passing through, but as one of the people helping define the week’s biggest prize conversations.
