Emmanuel Petit has cast South Africa as a possible World Cup surprise package and singled out Lyle Foster as the one striker who could tilt tight games their way. With Bafana Bafana due to open against Mexico at Estadio Azteca on the night of 9pm SA time, the timing of that assessment matters: the tournament starts now, and so does the scrutiny.
Petit’s view is built around a squad he believes knows itself well. South Africa go into the competition with 19 locally based players, many of them drawn from Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates, and the former World Cup winner said that kind of familiarity can matter in a major tournament. In his eyes, Foster stands apart because he is the side’s only really good striker, a Premier League forward who has also played in Belgium.
That is the reason Foster keeps surfacing in any serious conversation about South Africa’s prospects. Petit did not frame Bafana Bafana as a finished product, but as a team that has improved technically and collectively enough to trouble stronger opponents if the pieces click at the right time. He said the spine of the side comes from one club and that the players’ knowledge of one another could be a genuine advantage in a tournament where organization often travels better than reputation.
But Petit also put his finger on the part of the argument that is harder to ignore. He said South Africa are probably missing experience and the kind of big names that can change a match on the pitch. Mexico, by contrast, are described by Petit as a very experienced World Cup nation, which is why the opening game will feel less like a routine first step than a test of whether South Africa can stay in the contest long enough to make their cohesion matter.
The new 48-team format gives Bafana Bafana a wider path than in previous World Cups. The top two teams in each group move on, but the eight best third-placed teams also advance, which means a bad opening result does not automatically end the story. Petit said that even if South Africa lose to Mexico, they still have a chance to collect points against Czechia and Korea Republic, and that leaves the door open for a team he believes can still surprise people if it shows fight. For Bafana Bafana, the first answer comes in Mexico City; the bigger one may not arrive until the group is finished.
