Crews were battling a brush fire Wednesday morning on the southern edges of Camp Pendleton, and the fast-moving response pushed evacuation warnings into a nearby Oceanside neighborhood. The fire was reported about 10 a.m. in the base’s November Training Area near Wire Mountain Housing and the Marine Memorial Golf Course.
Evacuation warnings were issued for parts of northern Oceanside bordering the base, including homes west of Douglas Drive and west of Vandegrift Boulevard. Residents were told to prepare to evacuate quickly if needed, and officials set up a temporary evacuation point at El Camino High School at 400 Rancho Del Oro in Oceanside.
The camp pendleton fire is burning on a Marine base that borders Oceanside, which is why the warnings reached into a neighborhood adjacent to the installation. The notice did not say how many homes were covered, and it was not immediately clear whether any residents had actually been forced out of their houses.
What was not disclosed Wednesday was just as important as what was: the size of the fire and whether it had been contained were not stated. For now, the message to people in the warned area is plain — stay ready to leave fast, with El Camino High School serving as the place to go if the situation worsens.
