A man is in hospital with serious injuries after an assault on the Falls Road in Belfast in the early hours of Sunday morning, and police have arrested a 33-year-old man on suspicion of grievous bodily harm.
Police received the report at about 2.15am, saying the man had a head injury that was consistent with an assault. Officers and the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service attended the scene, and the injured man was taken to hospital for treatment.
The case matters now because the victim’s condition is serious and the arrest has already been made, turning what began as an overnight emergency into an active criminal inquiry. Police have said the 33-year-old remains in custody while enquiries continue, and they are still trying to establish exactly what happened on the street.
That missing detail is the point that still hangs over the incident. Police have not said what led to the assault, and they have not said whether any charge has been brought. What they have made clear is that the injuries are being treated as consistent with an assault, not an accident, and that investigators want anyone who was in the area and may have CCTV or other footage to come forward.
They have asked witnesses to contact them on 101 and quote reference 178 07/06/26. Reports can also be made online through the non-emergency form on the PSNI website, while Crimestoppers can be reached anonymously on 0800 555 111 or through its website. With the injured man still being treated and the suspect still in custody, the next stage will be about evidence: who was there, what was captured, and whether that fills in the gap between the report at 2.15am and the arrest that followed.
