unveiled iOS 27 at 2026 on Monday, putting performance, design changes and a deeper push into AI at the center of its next major iPhone software update. The release is also notable for how far back it reaches: iPhone 11 owners are still on the supported list.

That means users holding onto a four-year-old iPhone can expect to test the same update Apple is pitching for newer models, even as the company tries to frame iOS 27 as more than a routine upgrade. The attention now is coming from people who want to know whether their phones qualify and what Apple is actually changing under the hood.

One of the most visible changes is an opacity slider for Liquid Glass, the glassy interface Apple introduced with iOS 26. Apple had already tweaked that design before iOS 26 reached the public in September 2026, and now it is giving users another way to control how translucent parts of the system look, including elements such as tab bars. For owners of older iPhones, that kind of adjustment is not cosmetic trivia; it is part of the pitch that the software can feel fresher without leaving their devices behind.

Apple is also leaning hard into what it calls the next generation of Apple Intelligence, built on a bold new architecture and an all-new Siri. The assistant, now referred to as Siri AI, is meant to be more conversational, with responses appearing from the Dynamic Island at the top of the screen, a new voice experience and options to customize pace and expressivity. There is even a dedicated Siri app that keeps a history of conversations synced with iCloud, while the camera app can enter a Siri mode that identifies objects, explains them and saves those exchanges inside the app.

That promise carries extra weight because Apple has already had to explain why the upgraded assistant did not arrive sooner. It first announced a revamped AI-powered Siri at , then said in March 2025 that it was delaying the upgrade because it was taking longer than we thought to deliver the updates. Apple later settled a lawsuit over failing to deliver many of those abilities, and earlier this year it said it would use ’s Gemini AI for the big Siri overhaul. Apple is now promoting the same long-delayed assistant under a new label, with Siri AI initially available only in English.

What Apple did not give Monday was a public release date for iOS 27. For iPhone 11 users and everyone with a newer model, the next question is no longer whether their devices will be eligible. It is when Apple will turn the announcement into software they can actually install.
