Google AI Studio can now be used to build native Android apps starting today, opening a new path for people who want to turn an idea into software without leaving the company’s AI tools. Users can prompt an app concept, preview it in an embedded Android emulator and, if they want, connect an Android device to a computer to install the app on a phone.
The move gives Google a more direct role in the earliest stage of app creation, from prompt to prototype to handset. Google said the first release is aimed at personal utility apps such as habit trackers and study quizzes, as well as hardware-enabled experiences that use a phone’s camera or GPS and AI-powered experiences that rely on Gemini’s API. The company also said that in the future users will be able to invite app testers from AI Studio.
That expansion matters because Google is pairing a lower-friction creation tool with the same rules that govern the rest of its app ecosystem. Mia Carter said app quality remains a top priority for Google Play and that the company will not change its review processes and standards. She also said apps made with AI Studio still have to meet strict quality and review standards before they can reach Google Play.
Google framed the Android app-building feature as an initial release, a sign that the company is still testing how far the tool can go and how much control users should have inside it. The broader announcements tied to the rollout also included a 1.0 version of Google’s command-line interface for building Android apps, plus a short-form video feed called Play Shorts that is rolling out in Google Play to users in the US and select developers.
The tension in the rollout is clear: Google is making it easier to produce apps, but it is not relaxing the gatekeeping that decides which ones survive. That balance will shape how quickly AI Studio turns from a novelty for hobby projects into a real source of Android software, especially as Google begins showing apps as recommendations to Gemini queries in the coming weeks and plans to surface movies and TV shows in Gemini queries later this year.
