A 19-year-old woman died after gunshots were heard at a house in Dale Grove, Finchley, just after midnight on Monday, as police closed off the road and launched a homicide investigation in north London.
Emergency services were called to the property after the London Ambulance Service contacted police, and the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Her family has been told and is being supported by specially trained officers. No arrests have been made, and detectives are still trying to establish what happened inside the house.
The case has landed in a stretch of Finchley that neighbours described as quiet and family-friendly. Geraldine Haren said she was “really shocked to hear the news” and called it “a very family-friendly [area]” where people “get on with each other,” adding that it is “such a quiet area” and that she felt for the family. Faz Saj said it was “a bit out of character for this neighbourhood, to be honest,” and said he was “still shocked, to be honest with you.”
Det Ch Insp Allam Bhangoo, who is leading the investigation, said the force’s thoughts were with the young woman’s family as they begin to cope with the loss. He also said residents should expect an increased police presence over the coming days while enquiries continue, and urged anyone with concerns to speak with officers. A formal identification and post-mortem examination have yet to take place, leaving investigators with the basic question that now drives the case: what led to the gunshots at the Finchley house?
For the people who live there, the immediate reality is not just grief but disruption. Dale Grove was shut off as officers worked at the scene, and the coming days are likely to bring more police activity to a neighbourhood that residents say is usually defined by gardens, children and quiet streets, not a fatal shooting.
