A major road was shut on Monday after a large industrial fire in Abercynon sent thick smoke over nearby homes and across the A470 during the morning rush. People in the area were told to keep their windows and doors closed as firefighters battled the blaze at Ty Menter in Navigation Park, Rhondda Cynon Taf.
The disruption mattered because the smoke did not stay inside the industrial site. It spread far enough to cut visibility on one of south Wales’ busiest commuter routes and affect homes nearby, turning a workplace blaze into a wider public problem before many drivers had even finished their morning journey.
Zach Bennett, 19, said he spotted a plume of smoke above the trees and drove over to see what was happening. He said he wanted to get some pictures and was “just being nosy”, but when he arrived he found more people heading toward the fire than away from it, which he described as peculiar. Around the buildings, he said, staff were standing at muster points while flames climbed through the site.
What he saw was not a small outbreak. Bennett said one roof had a “tornado-like” flame above it and the wind was pushing it high into the air. Fire crews were spraying water onto the building, he said, but after the roof collapsed they let it burn. That detail matters because it showed the limits of the response once the structure gave way and the fire took hold.
Ty Menter was being used as a training centre, and that made the blaze especially disruptive for a site that was supposed to be controlled and contained. Instead, smoke drifted over roads and homes, forcing warnings that went beyond the building itself. The scene on the A470 also underlined how quickly an industrial fire can spill into daily life when visibility drops during a busy weekday morning.
What caused the fire was not stated. For now, the immediate answers are the ones drivers and nearby residents already had to deal with on Monday: the A470 was shut, smoke was still hanging over the area, and firefighters were left with a damaged building that they could not save once the roof came down.
