Cody Gakpo is being lined up for a summer move to Tottenham after reports said the Liverpool forward wants out following Arne Slot’s exit from Anfield. Tottenham are planning to try to prise the Dutchman away from Merseyside, with the situation moving quickly after Liverpool turned to a new head coach.
The timing matters because Liverpool appointed Andoni Iraola on Thursday, only days after sacking Slot late last month, and the club’s rebuild is already under way after a trophyless finish in fifth place. Gakpo’s name has now been pulled into that reshuffle, with Tottenham believed to have serious interest as they look to add more quality in attack.
That interest did not appear from nowhere. In March, Danny Murphy said Gakpo had “fallen off the cliff” compared with his form last season, and towards the end of that month Graeme Bailey said the forward had genuine chances to leave Liverpool in the summer. TEAMtalk also understood at the time that intermediaries were actively offering him to clubs across the Premier League and Europe, which helped lay the groundwork for the latest move.
The friction comes from Liverpool’s own turnaround. A new head coach has arrived, but the report says the attacker himself also wishes to leave after Slot was sacked, which leaves the club trying to plan a summer rebuild around a player who may not be part of it. Mohamed Salah is expected to leave for another club this summer, Ibrahima Konate looks set to join Real Madrid and Andy Robertson has already joined Tottenham on a free transfer.
Soccer News reported that several English sources say Gakpo wants out, that Tottenham have a serious interest and that they intend to try to lure him away in the coming period. It also said clubs in England, Spain and Germany are tracking him, so Spurs may have to move fast if they want to turn interest into a bid. Liverpool’s next step is the bigger question now: whether Iraola’s arrival changes Gakpo’s mind, or whether the winger becomes one more major departure in a summer that is already reshaping Anfield.
