Manchester United have confirmed that Rasmus Højlund has joined Napoli on a permanent transfer, ending a loan spell that turned into a full move once the Italian club secured Champions League qualification. Napoli will pay €44million for the striker, taking the total value of the deal to €50million after the €6m loan fee paid last summer.
The timing matters because the move was tied to performance on the pitch, and Hojlund delivered enough to force the clause into action. He scored 16 goals and added eight assists in 44 matches in all competitions for Napoli this season, helping them win the Supercoppa Italiana and finish second in Serie A, which secured their place in the 2026/27 Champions League.
United framed the departure as the end of a homecoming that never quite became one. In its announcement, the club described the Denmark international as a boyhood United fan, even as it noted he had signed from Atalanta in the summer of 2023, scored 26 goals in 95 appearances and was part of the squad that lifted the Emirates FA Cup in May 2024. He returned to Italy on a season-long loan at the start of the 2025/26 campaign and did enough there to make Napoli’s purchase unavoidable.
The move had been building toward this point for months. Napoli’s loan agreement included an obligation to buy if they qualified for the Champions League next season, and that condition was met when they finished second in Serie A. Fabrizio Romano reported on X at 11:22am on June 3 that Napoli and United had already confirmed the permanent deal and the clause behind it, effectively signalling what the clubs later made official.
What Napoli do with Højlund next is the remaining question. The fee is settled, the obligation has been triggered and the forward is now theirs outright, but the club has not said whether he will be the focal point of the attack or one part of a wider rebuild as they return to Europe’s top competition.
