A Walmart page briefly listed Gears of War: E-Day for PlayStation 5 late yesterday, then stripped the reference after it was noticed. The placeholder page showed a $99.99 standard edition and surfaced less than 24 hours before Microsoft’s 2026 Xbox Games Showcase.
That was enough to set off the kind of speculation Microsoft has spent months inviting. Reddit user Laughing__Man_ posted the Walmart link for a “Gears: E-Day Standard Edition” on PS5, and IGN was able to view the page before it was pulled. The listing described the game as a first-person shooter with a pending ESRB rating and carried filler copy that read “Placeholder 1,” “TBD 2,” and “TBD 3.”
The interest around the listing comes from what Gears of War: E-Day has been expected to be since its announcement in 2024: a title for PC and Xbox Series X|S, not Sony’s console. A PS5 retail page, even a rough one, lands at a moment when Microsoft has been signaling a willingness to rethink where its games appear. In April, a mission statement emailed to Xbox staff said leadership would reevaluate the company’s approach to exclusivity, and one month later chief content officer Matt Booty warned that the upcoming Xbox Games Showcase would still feature competing logos.
Just days ago, Sharma said in a conversation that a platform must have exclusive content and services, calling the earlier decision to spotlight other platforms “a miss” and saying talks about how to adjust future Xbox shows were already happening behind the scenes. That sits awkwardly beside the Walmart page, which looked less like a polished retail announcement than a placeholder that may have been posted ahead of schedule or from outdated information.
Jeff Grubb sharpened that contradiction by saying Gears of War: E-Day “was going to be on PS5” but is “not anymore” after an internal decision that “just got made.” If that is right, the Walmart listing did not expose a plan that is still active; it exposed a plan that has already changed. The Gears of War: E-Day Direct was scheduled to follow the Xbox Games Showcase 2026 presentation later today, and that is where the next answer should come from.
