Mahogany Street was placed under an evacuation order Saturday after a fire broke out near the Saratoga Springs Utah Temple, turning part of Saratoga into an active emergency scene as crews moved in at 3:52 p.m. The fire was reported at least 2 miles from temple.

Officials asked people to stay out of the area, especially the Mountain View Corridor south of Pony Express Parkway and the Brixton Park neighborhood, as aircraft worked overhead and emergency vehicles tried to reach the fire. A later post at 4:54 p.m. said no drones should be flying in the area.

The fire could be seen on cameras at Redwood Road and Parkway Boulevard, a sign of how quickly the smoke and response had spread across the Saratoga Springs area. It was on the north side of Lake Mountain, where access restrictions widened beyond Mahogany Street to keep curious onlookers from getting in the way.

That part of the response became a problem of its own: cars coming to look were blocking emergency vehicles even as crews were responding to the fire. In a fast-moving scene, the hazard was not only the flames but the traffic drawn to them, forcing responders to work around people who should have been clearing space instead of filling it.

What remained unclear was how large the fire had grown or whether homes or other structures were threatened. The immediate concern Saturday was keeping residents out, keeping roads open for responders and preventing more people from entering a scene that was still active and could change quickly.
