Marcus McGhee is back in the Octagon this weekend, ending an 11-month layoff with a fight against John Yannis. The 36-year-old bantamweight standout has not competed since facing Petr Yan last summer in Abu Dhabi, and his return comes after a stretch that kept him on the sideline longer than he wanted.
“This is the way the cards have fallen,” McGhee said, adding that fighters have to “choose what you can, and you adapt to what you must adapt to, but here we are.” For him, the moment matters now because the fight is here this weekend and because Yannis stepped in after the matchup nearly collapsed. McGhee said, “We almost lost this one but thank you to John Yannis for pulling up and deciding to take the fight, so super-grateful to be here now.”
The long gap was not something McGhee pretended to enjoy. He said being shelved for that long was frustrating and came with many emotional moments, even if he stayed grounded through it. His family and lifestyle helped keep him steady, and he used the layoff to get better in the gym, build his family and strengthen his mental fortitude. “I’ve just been using it for what it is and getting better in the gym, building my family, building my own mental fortitude,” he said.
That work did not happen in isolation. McGhee said he was in Winnipeg with Kyler Phillips and went through Phillips’ entire camp, also spent time in Mario Bautista’s camps and has been in the gym with Abdul Kamara while Kamara has been fighting regularly for Fury FC. The pattern mattered, he said, because his teammates stayed active and forced him to keep training rather than drift away from competition entirely. “Using the time wisely has been good for me,” he said.
What remains unknown is how much an 11-month absence changes a fighter who says he has been training the whole time. McGhee has done the work and the calendar has finally given him a fight, but the only real answer now comes when he meets Yannis this weekend.
