Aberdeen have agreed to sign Dan Happe on a two-year deal with an option for a third, with the 27-year-old defender set to arrive at Pittodrie when his Leyton Orient contract ends this summer.
The move gives Aberdeen a 6ft 6in centre-back who has played more than 250 senior games and won promotion twice with Orient, including the National League title in 2019 and the EFL League Two championship in 2023. It also answers a clear need for a side looking to rebuild its back line before the new season begins.
Happe has spent his entire career at one club since joining Leyton Orient’s academy at 14, but he said the chance to move on had come at the right time. He described Aberdeen manager Stephen Robinson as positive and enthusiastic about the club and what he wants to achieve, and said the conversation convinced him the move was the right one even though he had other options and interest from teams in England. For a player who has only known one senior home, the switch is a major change. For Aberdeen, it is a targeted addition with a very specific profile.
Robinson has been explicit about what he expects to gain. He said Happe is a leader who is dominant in the air, something Aberdeen have missed, and said the defender can make an immediate impact while also fitting the club’s longer-term plan. That matters because Happe himself did not hide the edge of last season’s disappointment, even as he backed the squad the manager is putting together and said he wants to help the club get back into Europe and win trophies. His arrival is being sold as both repair and ambition at once.
The one detail still missing is when he will actually join his new teammates and be available to play. Happe said he is looking forward to settling into life in Aberdeen and meeting them in a couple of weeks, but the club has not confirmed an exact start date. Until then, the signing stands as a clear signal of intent: Aberdeen have added size, experience and a proven winner before summer has even turned into pre-season.
