Blackburn Rovers have moved into the final stretch of their search for a permanent head coach, with Ewood Park officials speaking to candidates in recent weeks and a decision expected within the next 10 days. The club has spent 23 days without a permanent boss since confirming Michael O'Neill's decision, and the race to replace him is now reaching its decisive point.
That is why Blackburn Rovers is suddenly drawing so much attention now. This is the club's first off-season managerial recruitment process since 2022, and it matters because the appointment will shape the next season at Ewood Park. Jon Dahl Tomasson was not named until June 14 the last time Blackburn went through this kind of process, and the delay this time has only sharpened the focus on who comes next.
Slaven Bilic has been at the forefront of the conversations, with understanding from Lancashire Telegraph that he held talks with Blackburn a few weeks ago. The club wanted to continue those discussions, but Bilic had reservations after reflecting on the job, and there is a belief in the game that he may be keeping an eye on an international position after the World Cup. That leaves Blackburn still searching, even after making what looked like their most serious contact with a leading candidate.
Dave Challinor remains in the frame too, and his name has carried a different kind of appeal. He is viewed as the riskier appointment, but he has never finished below a play-off place in 15-odd seasons as a manager, and Stockport County have been one of the best run clubs in the country for the last three years. Tony Mowbray has also been linked, though those February reports had no substance, and he was never contacted about succeeding Ismael, despite renewed chatter around his name.
There has been plenty of smoke and mirrors around this search, and that is part of why the final choice still has not been made. Jon Dahl Tomasson was not initially interviewed and only later emerged through Gregg Broughton, while Steve Waggott had already lined up John Eustace in 2023/24 and Ismael was the board's choice last February. Blackburn now needs the white smoke to match the noise, because the next 10 days should tell supporters whether the club is going for the safer name, the more adventurous one, or someone else entirely.
