Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office detectives said Thursday that Ryan Charles Whiten killed his ex-wife, Melanie Hyer, and their two daughters before taking his own life inside Hyer’s home in Doral. The bodies of Hyer, 42, Savannah, 11, and Sienna, 8, were found in the gated community after a welfare check Tuesday night.
The confirmation turned what had been a grim police response into a murder-suicide case, and it put names to a loss that had already begun rippling through South Florida’s school and sports community. Officials said all four family members were pronounced dead from stab wounds.
Authorities said detectives reached that conclusion after investigating the deaths, though they have not said what led up to the killings. Hyer had finalized her divorce in March, and she and Whiten had separated years earlier but were still co-parenting their daughters when they died.
That history makes the statements from people who knew the family harder to square with the violence police described. Whiten’s ex-wife said he was always so sweet with his girls and loved them deeply, while also describing the long battle between Whiten and Hyer as toxic for years. Officials, by contrast, said the investigation showed he committed what they called heinous acts before killing himself.
Hyer worked as a probate real estate agent in South Florida and specialized in luxury waterfront and commercial properties. Mayor Christi Fraga called her “a light of sunshine” and said she was always eager to help at school and to be involved as a mom. Savannah and Sienna attended Downtown Doral Elementary and played on the Doral Field Hockey team.
The immediate next step is not a criminal charge but a search for motive, because Whiten is dead and the case now rests on what investigators can reconstruct from the home, the timeline and the family’s past. A Catholic mass in remembrance of Hyer and her two daughters was being held Friday night, while detectives continued the investigation into how a family that had been trying to parent after separation ended in three deaths and a suicide.
