Hunter Biden on June 3 accused Jake Tapper of attacking Jill Biden after the anchor questioned her defense of Joe Biden’s fitness in the aftermath of her new memoir, and the exchange quickly turned a family dispute into the latest fight over the former president’s 2024 campaign. In a post on X, Biden wrote, “So let me get this straight. Jake Tapper is focused on attacking my Mom,” making the clash public and personal.
The remark landed as readers were already searching for what prompted the blowup: Jill Biden’s memoir, View from the East Wing, and the criticism that followed it. In the book, she writes that if people knew Joe Biden well, they would know he would step down if he reached a point where he could not do the job. Tapper called that claim “downright false” and said his criticism was not about whether Biden was kind or shared the same values, but about whether he could run for president, win the campaign and serve as president.
Hunter Biden pushed back by arguing that Tapper was targeting his mother instead of asking harder questions of Donald Trump’s family. He also said the anchor had ignored controversies involving the president’s children while centering the Biden family. The accusation sharpened an already sensitive debate because Jill Biden has been out promoting the memoir and defending her husband’s judgment in public appearances.
That defense has run alongside another issue that keeps pulling the Bidens into the news: Joe Biden’s health. On June 1, Jill Biden told’s Today that her husband is “doing OK” as he continues treatment for prostate cancer. She said that if he had only been diagnosed with prostate cancer, “that’s one thing, because that can be cured,” but that the disease had metastasized to his bones, which made it “a whole different story.” She added, “So I think Joe will live with cancer ’till the rest of his life.”
The dispute also carries a personal edge that has long shaped how the Bidens talk about family. Hunter Biden’s mother, Neilia Hunter Biden, and his sister Naomi were killed in a car accident in Delaware on Dec. 18, 1972. Joe and Jill Biden married in 1977, and Jill Biden has often described herself as part of that family structure, which is why Hunter’s complaint on X landed with more force than a routine political jab.
What comes next is less about the memoir than about whether Tapper or responds to being named so directly. For now, Hunter Biden has turned a media critique into a family defense, and the argument over Joe Biden’s mental and physical fitness is not receding; it is being reopened in public, with Jill Biden at the center of it.
