Ibrahima Konate is set to leave Liverpool and join Real Madrid on a free transfer when his contract expires, bringing down the curtain on a five-year spell at Anfield. The move would put him on the same side as Trent Alexander-Arnold, who made the switch to Madrid last summer.
For Liverpool, it is a major departure. Konate arrived from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2021 in a £36m deal and went on to win the Premier League, FA Cup and two League Cups, while establishing himself as one of the club’s regular central defenders. His exit would strip away both experience and a player who spent five seasons embedded in a side that kept competing for trophies.
The search interest around Konate is easy to understand today because the Madrid link is no longer hypothetical. He is poised to follow Alexander-Arnold to the Spanish capital, and the two already have a history that goes beyond club badges. After Liverpool lost the 2022 Champions League final to Real Madrid, Alexander-Arnold called Konate’s display “Outstanding” and said he was “lost for words,” adding that the centre-back had “huge potential” and that the pair had “created a bond.”
That connection has already crossed into international football. Before France faced England in the 2022 World Cup quarter-final, Konate said Alexander-Arnold had messaged him: “See you on Saturday, my brother,” a sign of how close the two remained despite the rivalry. Alexander-Arnold also made clear then that Konate’s pace, strength and athleticism set him apart, and that learning alongside Virgil van Dijk had only sharpened his game.
The part that will sting Liverpool most is the gap between what Konate said and what is now expected to happen. In April, he said he was “close” to putting pen to paper on fresh terms, yet the talks have not produced a renewal and he is now heading for the exit on a free transfer. That turns what looked like a contract update into a quiet but costly loss for the club.
The remaining step is formal rather than speculative: Konate is expected to complete the move to Real Madrid this summer once his Liverpool deal runs out. If that happens, Madrid will have added another Liverpool defender, and Alexander-Arnold and Konate will be teammates again, this time in white rather than red.
