Manchester United have agreed a £35m deal with Atalanta for Brazil midfielder Ederson, moving quickly on one of the first major decisions of their summer window. The 26-year-old still has to complete a medical, but sources expect the transfer to be wrapped up in early July before United return to pre-season training.
That is why this piece is being searched now: United are prioritising central midfield, and Ederson is the clearest name yet linked to the rebuild. The Brazil international, capped three times, has been tracked as a player who can sharpen a department that has lost ground since veteran Casemiro departed and Manuel Ugarte has not convinced as a long-term answer.
Ederson’s numbers explain the attraction. He scored 16 goals in 180 games for Atalanta in all competitions and was included in Brazil’s 55-man expanded World Cup squad before missing out on Carlo Ancelotti’s final selection. For United, that profile matters because the club are not looking for one simple replacement; they could end up making two, possibly three, additions in central midfield if the summer unfolds the way they expect.
There is still a gap between the plan and the squad in place. If Ugarte leaves before the window closes on 1 September, United would be left without experience in the deeper midfield positions, with Kobbie Mainoo, Mason Mount and Bruno Fernandes usually deployed further forward. Michael Carrick did not use Ugarte again after the Leeds defeat in April, a decision that underlines how little trust the midfielder has been given in that role.
United are also looking at other names. Mateus Fernandes is on their list, but there has still been no formal offer for the West Ham midfielder, while Elliot Anderson is admired even though he would prefer a move to Manchester City. Carlos Baleba was also of interest last summer, and the club are weighing up work in other areas too, including a left-sided player, striking support for Benjamin Sesko and the make-up of their goalkeeping group.
For now, Ederson is the one move that has crossed from interest into agreement. The medical is the next hurdle, and if that is cleared, United should have one of their core summer targets in place in time for pre-season — but not necessarily the full midfield reset they may still need.
One further piece of evidence suggests how open that rebuild remains. Radek Vitek won all of Bristol City’s player of the year prizes after a superb loan spell, then said in April he was open minded about the future but wanted to play regularly, making clear that United’s squad decisions are still far from settled.
