Jalen Brunson left the floor in the opening quarter of Game 1 of the 2026 NBA Finals after grabbing at his knee, then limped to the locker room and later came back to the bench still moving gingerly. The Knicks’ offense changed the moment he did.
That is the problem for New York on the first night of the series against the San Antonio Spurs: Brunson is the player the Knicks depend on to steady possessions, create shots and carry the offense when the game tightens. He entered the Finals as an All-NBA Second-Team guard after averaging 26.0 points, 6.8 assists and 3.3 rebounds per game this season, and he raised that level in the postseason with 26.9 points and 6.6 assists per game while shooting 48.6 percent from the field and 35.2 percent from deep.
Brunson’s value to New York is even clearer because the bracket has already shown how much the Knicks lean on him. He was the Eastern Conference Finals MVP in the win over the Cleveland Cavaliers, a run that pushed New York into the Finals for the first time since 1999. The Knicks have no one else on the roster who can simply replace what he does as the leader of the offense, which is why every step he takes on that knee matters in a way few other injuries could.
And yet, the sight that will linger from the opening quarter is how quickly the guard tried to push through it. Brunson returned to the bench to start the second quarter, still limping before he checked back into the contest, a sign that he was not willing to sit unless he had to. That decision may have bought the Knicks a few more minutes of their best player, but it also left the bigger question hanging over the rest of the Finals.
If Brunson’s knee holds up, the Knicks can keep playing the way they intended when the series began. If it does not, New York’s path against San Antonio changes immediately, because the team can turn to Jose Alvarado and Miles McBride off the bench, but neither can recreate the same control or shot-making that Brunson brings every night.
