The 20-minute sequence opens with Kratos and his son holding a cremation burial for Faye, the wife of Kratos and mother of Atreus, just as she was cremated at the start of 2018’s God of War. From there, the game cuts to a third-person view of Faye moving through ruins and cutting down monsters in another realm, a reveal that makes clear she is not just part of the story but the lead driving it forward.
That shift is what makes the announcement land today. Fans expected a continuation of the Norse-era story, but the reveal sequence seemed designed to pass the torch to Faye instead, even as it began with the familiar image of Kratos and Atreus mourning her.
