Mandi Murray died in Lanzarote on Thursday, May 28, after suffering a sudden heart attack about 24 hours after arriving in the Canary Islands. The 46-year-old Glasgow mother had travelled out for what was meant to be a holiday and a break, but her trip ended in tragedy almost as soon as it began.
Her daughter Courtney has launched a GoFundMe campaign to help support her father, Derek, and the appeal has already raised more than £1,780 within a few hours of going live. In the fundraiser message, Courtney said her mum had flown out to Lanzarote a couple of days earlier and added that the family was seeking help with financial pressures as they face life without her.
The scale of the response shows how widely Murray was known and how quickly news of her death spread through her family and community. She worked as a door steward at The Ferry and was a familiar supporter of Celtic FC and the Scotland national football team, while her son Steven said she was both his biggest critic and one of his best friends.
Steven described her as “a family woman through and through” who would have gone to the ends of the earth for the people she loved. He said she was “a friend to many” and known for being “incredibly outspoken,” and recalled nights spent “chatting, laughing and putting the world to rights until three in the morning.”
The break in Lanzarote was supposed to give Murray time away, but it was cut short by the heart attack that followed so soon after she landed. Courtney wrote that her mother “passed away peacefully,” and McKenzi shared a photograph of her surrounded by loved ones, a reminder of the life now being mourned at home.
Tributes continued to gather online as friends and relatives struggled with the abruptness of her death. Kayden Stevenson called her “the most beautiful soul in the world,” while Ann Kelly posted, “Fly high with the angels, Mandi.” The fundraiser will keep running for support for Derek, but the question that remains unanswered is what caused the sudden heart attack that took her life so quickly after she arrived.
