needed one swing and got it, beating 2-1 on a walk-off win May 30 to move into the Women’s College World Series semifinals without a loss. The Lady Vols are now in the position every team wants and every opponent fears: one defeat away from trouble, but not out unless they are beaten twice.

That is why the search for Tech turned into a search for Tennessee’s path forward. The No. 7 seed is back in the semifinals and will play Texas on June 1 at noon ET on, with a chance to reach the championship series by staying perfect in the bracket. Tennessee has not had that kind of cushion this deep into the tournament since 2013, the last time it advanced to the semifinals without dropping out of the winner’s bracket and the last time it made the championship series.

helped create the opening Tennessee needed against Texas earlier in the week. She hit a leadoff single in the fifth inning on May 28 and later scored on a pair of wild pitches as Tennessee beat the reigning national champion 6-3 in the semifinal opener. Junior pitcher made that start matter, holding Texas to one hit in four innings while Tennessee piled up six runs in what became the second-highest scoring game of the NCAA Tournament.

The matchup now carries a built-in edge for Tennessee because it reached this stage unbeaten, while Texas had to go through Nebraska in an elimination game on May 31 to get here. The Longhorns, the No. 2 seed and reigning national champions, already know what Tennessee can do to them. Tennessee already beat Texas once in this round, and it did it with control, speed and pressure that forced the game away from the favorite.

That does not make Sunday simple. It makes it sharp. Tennessee has been in the Women’s College World Series semifinals three times in the past four years, but this is different because the bracket has tilted in its favor and the next win would send the Lady Vols to their third-ever championship series. If Texas wins, Tennessee is still alive. If Tennessee wins, the path clears fast.

For Tennessee, the math is plain. Beat Texas once and it moves on. Lose and the bracket gives the Lady Vols another chance. That is the reward for surviving Texas Tech, and the reason June 1 now matters more than the walk-off that got them there.
