Zendaya’s Rue has started saying out loud what the rest of Euphoria has been hinting at for years. In the penultimate episode of season three, she tells viewers, “If there’s a beginning, there must be an end,” a line that lands just as the series heads into its May 31 finale.
That is why the question does Rue die in Euphoria is suddenly being searched so heavily now. The show, which premiered on HBO in the summer of 2019, has run for seven years across three seasons, and the ending has become the story. Colman Domingo has described it as something that will “smack people in the face,” and the finale is the first real point where that kind of payoff can arrive.
The build-up in season three has pushed Rue into criminal territory, far from the high school chaos that once defined the drama. She is working with Nazis, the feds and a Black cowboy in a drug plot, while the rest of the cast is also being pushed toward ugly ends. Maddy loses her assistant job in part for helping Cassie escape her toxic marriage to Nate, and Nate is buried alive on one of his own construction sites. That is the kind of season Euphoria has become: less about shock for its own sake than about whether anyone makes it out at all.
Still, the ending is being framed in predictions, not certainty. Staffers are floating several possible outcomes, including a death tied to Rue’s path, one in which Ali dies trying to save her from the drug business, another that ends in a massive shoot-out with Alamo and Laurie both killed, and even a version where Cassie does not survive. For all the talk of finality, none of that is confirmed. What is confirmed is the date: May 31. If Euphoria is ending for good, the last episode will have to answer whether Rue survives the finish or becomes the show’s final casualty.
