Apple TV has made a broad January 2026 bet on Brandon Sanderson’s sprawling fantasy universe, announcing a landmark deal that puts a Mistborn movie, The Stormlight Archive TV series and Skyward on television all in development at once. Sanderson is writing the Mistborn screenplay himself, and he has unprecedented creative control over both projects.
The deal is the sort of move that sends readers searching immediately, because it turns one of fantasy’s busiest authors into a major screen prospect almost overnight. Sanderson has published over 70 books, and for fans who have followed the range from intimate character studies to gonzo genre mashups, the question now is not whether Hollywood is paying attention but how much of the library is about to move from page to screen.
That push also lands on a backlist with clear anchors. Elantris, Sanderson’s debut novel and the first book he ever published, is set in the kingdom of Arelon, where the Shaod once randomly chose ordinary people and transformed them into Elantrians. Ten years before the current story, that magic broke. What had once been a force that created near-divine beings now traps the afflicted behind the walls of Elantris in bodies that can feel every wound and never heal.
That is part of what gives Sanderson’s work its pull on screen: high-concept worlds, hard rules and emotional stakes that do not vanish once the magic does. The Cosmere deal now gives Apple TV three major adaptations in development, but it does not give viewers a date. Mistborn, The Stormlight Archive and Skyward are moving forward, yet release dates have not been announced, leaving the next milestone to be the first concrete production update rather than the promise itself.
