Johan Vásquez said he is happy at Genoa, but he does not know what comes next. The Mexico defender also acknowledged that Inter Milan had shown interest, though nothing serious came of it.
The timing matters because Vásquez is speaking as Mexico prepares for a warm-up match against Australia and as the 2026 World Cup picture comes into focus. He said his children were born in Italy and that he is happy in the city where he lives now, which makes his comments less like a transfer tease than a reminder that his club future remains unsettled.
For Mexico, Vásquez is not guaranteed a starting place. He said there are many players who can play center back, and that he will try to provide security for the team’s final objectives before the 2026 World Cup. That matters because he is trying to secure his place while also living with the uncertainty of the market.
Asked about his situation, Vásquez did not dress it up. “No tengo claro, no sé el futuro, pero soy feliz donde estoy,” he said. On Inter, he was just as direct: there was something there, but it stopped there. He said he talks about it with his wife, noted that his children were born in Italy, and added that he cannot say he wants to live there forever. For now, he said, he is happy in the city where he is living, even if tomorrow is another matter.
That uncertainty sits alongside a more immediate concern for Mexico. Vásquez said the World Cup group with Korea, South Africa and Chequia is difficult, and that the team has to think match by match. The first game, he said, will be a life-or-death match. He also said there is pressure on Mexico because of what happened at Qatar 2022, when the team went out in the group stage, and that this time the objective is to do things differently.
His view leaves Mexico with a player who is focused on the present but not tied to a fixed future. He will keep preparing with the national team, but until the club market moves or stalls for good, the most honest answer about Johan Vásquez is still the one he gave himself: happy for now, unsure about what comes next.
