The NBA upgraded Mason Plumlee’s hard foul on Jared McCain to a Flagrant 1 on Wednesday, a day after the play came late in Oklahoma City’s 127-114 win in Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals.
The ruling gave extra weight to a moment that unfolded after the game was already under control. Plumlee was on the floor for just two minutes in garbage time, yet the league still reviewed the play and decided it crossed the line.
McCain, who scored 20 points in his first career playoff start, said he was caught off guard by the hit. “That was crazy. I didn’t expect it, obviously,” he said after the game. He added that while both teams were at the free-throw line, he asked Plumlee, “Why’d you do that man?” McCain said Plumlee answered, “I’ve got another one for you, too.”
The exchange mattered because McCain was not just filling time in a lopsided finish. He had already scored 24 points in Game 3 earlier in the series, and with Jalen Williams and Ajay Mitchell sidelined by injuries, he has become part of Oklahoma City’s push. On Tuesday, he helped the Thunder take a 3-2 lead and move within one win of the NBA Finals, while Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 32 points with nine assists and Alex Caruso added 22 off the bench.
What made Plumlee’s foul stand out is that it happened when the outcome was settled. Even so, the NBA’s upgrade shows the league saw enough in the play to treat it as more than a routine hard foul. McCain later framed it in competitive terms, saying, “It’s all in competition, so gotta respect it.”
Game 6 is scheduled for Thursday in San Antonio, and the only open question now is whether the Flagrant 1 ruling leads to anything further.
