Chet Holmgren gave Oklahoma City exactly the kind of night it needed Tuesday, scoring 16 points and pulling down 11 rebounds in a Game 5 win over the San Antonio Spurs that pushed the Thunder to a 3-2 lead in the Western Conference finals.
The result left the defending champions one victory from a second straight NBA Finals appearance, and Holmgren’s line matters because this is what the Thunder have asked him to be while the spotlight stays on Shai Gilgeous-Alexander: a big scoring presence when needed, but more often the force holding everything together on the other end.
That balance is part of why Holmgren’s stats draw so much attention. He is the anchor of the NBA’s most smothering defense and was the deserved runner-up in 2026 Defensive Player of the Year voting, but in Oklahoma City’s playoff offense he has still been a supplementary option behind Gilgeous-Alexander. With Jalen Williams missing most of the regular season and much of the playoffs because of injuries, the Thunder have needed Holmgren to do more than protect the rim, and on Tuesday he delivered enough offense to tilt a tight series game their way.
He also remains the kind of player who can seem locked in and still miss the moment around him. Kenrich Williams laughed about that recently, saying, “It’s funny, because it’s Chet,” and adding, “That’s Chet. He’s in his own world, man.” The description fit the team-plane scene that followed a late-March game in Denver, when Holmgren suddenly blurted out, “Oh!” and then, “Jamal Murray had 53! Y’all see that?!” after Murray’s career-best 53-point night, including nine 3-pointers, while the Thunder were playing in Boston.
That mix of concentration and drift is part of Holmgren’s appeal and part of the question hanging over Oklahoma City now. If the Thunder finish the job and reach the Finals again, his defense will stay central, but the offense may ask for more than Tuesday’s efficient 16 and 11. For now, the numbers and the win say the same thing: Oklahoma City is one step away, and Holmgren is still one of the pieces that gets it there.
