Barcelona have moved for Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie, but Arsenal still hold the stronger hand in a transfer battle that could end with the 24-year-old at the Emirates Stadium. The Spanish club have targeted the left-sided centre-back even though the Premier League side already have a £45 million purchase option attached to his loan.
That option matters because Hincapie is not a fresh market opportunity. He joined Arsenal last summer on a season-long loan from Leverkusen, and the deal includes an obligation to buy for £45 million if certain conditions are met. Arsenal have also already agreed personal terms with the Ecuador defender, with a five-year contract expected once the permanent move is completed.
The reason Barcelona have reopened the file is simple. Hansi Flick wants a left-footed centre-back for next season, and Hincapie fits that brief. According to a report in the Daily Mail, he has emerged as a leading target as Barcelona reshape their squad ahead of the summer window. The club had previously looked at Inter defender Alessandro Bastoni, but financial and sporting considerations pushed them to widen the search.
That is where Arsenal’s position becomes difficult for Barcelona to overcome. Hincapie is 24 years old and can operate on the left side of central defence, the profile Barcelona are chasing, but Arsenal’s contractual grip could decide the outcome before the Spaniards can turn interest into a serious bid. Leverkusen are also understood to have secured a 10% sell-on clause, which adds another layer to any negotiation and underlines how much of the deal is already spoken for.
Barcelona can keep monitoring the market, and Flick is expected to continue weighing defensive options as preseason approaches. But unless Arsenal walk away from the agreement they already made, the defender they want is more likely to finish this cycle in north London than in Catalonia. If Barcelona are serious, they may need to test both Arsenal’s resolve and Leverkusen’s price in a way the contract was built to discourage.
