Microsoft has pushed the Fable reboot out of 2026 and into February 2027, moving one of Xbox’s biggest expected releases off the holiday calendar. The company said it is planning its launches through the holidays “in a way that works best for players” and that Fable will get “the dedicated moment it deserves.”
The timing matters because Fable had been expected sometime in autumn 2026, even without an exact date, and the delay now removes it from a crowded year for Xbox fans. Microsoft also said it will show players a major new look at the game at Xbox Games Showcase on June 7, giving the reboot a fresh public milestone even as its launch slips further away.
That shift lands in a year already crowded by major releases and sharper than usual competition for attention. Microsoft itself pointed to a packed slate, and the delay comes as Grand Theft Auto 6 is set for November 19, a date that has become the kind of shadow no publisher wants hanging over a large holiday launch. In that context, February 2027 looks less like a simple postponement and more like a decision to avoid being trapped in someone else’s release window.
reported that Fable had never had an exact release date, but the game was widely expected in autumn 2026 before this move. The report said there is nothing to suggest the reboot is not finished, and nothing to suggest the change was driven by anything other than keeping it clear of Rockstar Games’ release. For Xbox, the knock-on effect is obvious: the company’s 25th anniversary plans were already under strain, and this pushes another expected centerpiece out of the celebration year.
Microsoft is still trying to turn the delay into momentum. It has promised a major new look at Fable at the June 7 showcase, which will be the next real test of whether the reboot can hold interest after losing its 2026 slot. What remains unanswered is how much of the shift is polish and planning, and how much is a hedge against a release calendar that has become too dangerous to ignore.
