Mark Fischbach says Iron Lung will arrive exclusively on YouTube as a paid purchase on May 31, 2026, setting a release date for the indie horror film and tying its next life directly to the platform built around his career.
He made the announcement during a Deadline-moderated panel at the Cannes Film Festival, where he also said he is “pretty loyal” to YouTube as his home. For viewers who followed the project from its earliest reveal, the update answers the most immediate question: the movie is not heading to a traditional streaming service, but back to the place where Fischbach already has a massive audience.
Iron Lung began as an adaptation of David Szymanski’s stripped-down indie horror game and centers on a lone prisoner inside a rusted submarine drifting through an ocean of blood on a dead moon. Fischbach, better known to millions as Markiplier, had never directed a feature before taking on the project himself, and he personally financed the film with a reported $4 million budget. It opened with $17.8 million domestically without any traditional marketing and went on to cross $50 million worldwide by the end of its theatrical run.
That scale makes the release plan more striking, not less. A movie made for a relatively small budget and boosted by Fischbach’s YouTube following became a major box-office story, yet he is still planning to step away for at least one year after it comes out. He said the break is largely about reconnecting with his wife and recovering from the amount of work the production demanded. He also edited the movie himself and handled international distribution through Piece of Magic Entertainment, then reportedly doubled the salaries of the cast and crew with profits from the film.
Fischbach said only that “next year I’ll be working on something,” without offering any details, leaving the next project open.
