Eight floating homes were damaged or destroyed early this morning in a fire at the Pier West Community in north Portland, after firefighters were called to the 1500 block of N. Marine Drive at 3:50 a.m.
The fire drew a second alarm, bringing additional firefighters to the scene, and Vancouver Fire responded with its fire boat. Officials later said no injuries have been reported and all residents evacuated safely.
That makes the damage at the waterfront community the central fact of the day. Eight homes gone or badly damaged is a heavy loss for any neighborhood, especially one built on the water, where each unit is more than a structure. It is a living space, a dockside address and, for the people inside, home.
The Pier West Community sits in north Portland, and the scale of the response showed how quickly a fire in that setting can spread across multiple floating homes. Portland Fire said firefighters are required to wear flotation devices under department safety rules, a reminder that the work on the water adds another layer of risk even before the flames are fully under control.
What officials have not said is what started the fire. That question now matters most, because the immediate danger appears to have passed and the residents got out safely, but the cause will shape whether this was a tragic accident, a mechanical failure or something investigators need to study more closely. For the families who watched eight homes burn or be ruined before dawn, the next phase is not the emergency response. It is the wait for answers.
